The Anaheim Angels won the World Series.

I'm going to break with tradition again this year. Last year, I decided to not do the usual "Top 10" list thing, and wrote a short narrative on what really sucked about 2001. This was, of course, after writing a very sarcastic list of nine other things that sucked in 2001, and then coming to the conclusion that the entire year really wasn't anything to be very cheeky about. This year, I'm going to break with tradition for what can only be described as the exact opposite reason.

The Anaheim Angels won the World Series.

In 2002, I went from living in a room at a friend's house in Tempe, only being able to visit with my wife when she'd make the Greyhound bus trip out from Orange County, to having a fairly nice apartment in a completely servicable part of Phoenix. Along the way, I've lived in a Motel 6, two different weekly studios, a really dumpy studio apartment in an iffy part of town. I've fought and struggled to try to rebuild my life into something that dosen't suck.

But, the Anaheim Angels won the World Series.

During the past 12 months, I've worked as a dishwasher, a dialup facilities engineer, and a salesman of used video games. I've also worked a few contract jobs, and even turned down a job interview after I found out that the employer performs drug testing (something I'm ethically Opposed to for jobs that don't involve "the public trust"). I've struggled to make ends meet on the little monies my wife makes working her fingers to the bone as a medical transcriptionist, while trying to get my health up to scratch enough to handle a full 8-hour a day job that dosen't involve sitting at console browsing the web waiting for something to happen.

And, I watched my childhood hometown team, the Anaheim Angels, win the World Series.

I did have some financial good fortune come my way. A stock investment my parents made when I was nine years old finally paid off. It provided living expenses for a couple of months, and allowed me to purchase some much needed stuff.. including making computer repairs, automotive repairs, clothing purchases, and a much needed vacation for said hard-working wife. It wasn't a lot of money, but it came at the right time.

And the ghost of Donnie Moore can rest, because the Anaheim Angels won the World Series.

Okay, maybe I'm a little obsessed. I'm sorry, but the events of October 12, 1986 ring in my head today as they did when I was 16. I was sitting in the living room of my uncle's house, watching the baseball playoffs with much anticipation. It looked like this was going to be the year.. this was going to be the time. My mom was getting down the champagne. But my uncle, ever the true Angel fan, said "We haven't won yet."

We didn't.

Little did I know that on the other side of this continent, a young woman was watching a different baseball game: she was hoping the Mets would beat Mike Scott and put the Mets into the World Series. The Mets did lose that game.. but they went on to beat the Astros, after ex-Angel Nolan Ryan pitched a gem of a game.

On the same day my future wife would be dancing, I watched on local television as they announced after the devastating loss to the Red Sox that Bobby Grich, then one of my favorite players, would be retiring from baseball.

Time gives you a funny perspective. In 1986, I wouldn't have imagined where I would be when the Angels would win the World Series. I couldn't have possibly had any clue that I would be sitting in a Carl's Jr. parking lot listening to the radio as they go to the World Series for the first time.. by scoring the most runs ever in a playoff game. Or that a scrappy little infielder would go yard three times in that game.

Or, in 1986, I couldn't have imagined that this young woman, who I can imagine was on Cloud Nine when the Mets won, would be my wife when I finally got to experience that feeling in 2002.

Yeah. Did I mention that the Anaheim Angels won the World Series? Good. That will be the memory of 2002 I'll always have. Thanks, guys.
